Ten Years After ... Ten Years Older (1986, 35 mins, 16mm)
Kannava, 10 years after migrating to Australia as a 15 year old in 1974, returns to her home city of Limassol in Cyprus, to reconnect with her beloved grandmother.
Kannava’s personal odyssey about returning back to Cyprus incorporates dramatic representations among the perceptive documentary fragments of everyday life in Limassol. The rhythm is exquisite, voice-over alternating with natural sounds, as memories of Kannava’s childhood come back to her, causing her joy and also great sadness.
(note by Bill Mousoulis)
"Ten Years After … Ten Years Older is a film that fully wrestles with the complicated feelings of leaving and returning home. Built through a delicate superimposition of layers of past and present, Ten Years After attests to the irretrievability of time, despite that some things never change. Shot in Cyprus, which Anna left at fifteen with her family to migrate to Australia, this film is a powerful meditation on memory, longing and belonging."
